Modeling is NOT an Exclusive Art Form
When you hear the words “Model, Modeling, Photoshoot” what image pops into your head? I suspect the visual looks something like this; A stunning 6’5”, thin, white, female strutting a massive runway or posing in a high end studio with a huge team of glamorous people around her. Does that sound about right? That image is accurate to the representation of the big fashion and modeling industry at large. However, I am here to tell you that you do not have to be excluded from modeling as an art form if you don’t fall in to that category of how human bodies can be built.
Modeling is NOT an exclusive art form.
Your physical manifestation is not required to be thin, white, femme, cis, or anything else to get in front of a camera and make some art. Modeling is often believed to be an exclusive experience for only the most “perfect” of conventionally beautiful humans to wear high end designers and be plastered in magazines. That is simply not true.
Modeling is an art form.
It can be utilized to feel, embody, and express a story. You are painting a moment in time with the physical expressions of your face and body while allowing it to be seen and captured. The color of your flesh gives richness to the image, the curvature of your shape gives texture, the asymmetry in your face gives life. When we use modeling and photography in this way, we’re allowing a moment of curated human experience to be captured; we’re making art out of our selves. That, combined with some general techniques for creating an effective image, is an equation for some incredible art.
