Posing - Tips and Tricks for any moment in front of a camera!
There are many times in life that we might need or want to strike a pose. Maybe for a cute picture to be posted on Instagram, a saucy nood to send to your lover, at an event (wedding/birthday/graduation), or even for a legit photoshoot. Knowing how to pop a quick pose for what ever reason will enhance your photos and your confidence in being photographed!
Here are a few tips and tricks that will change your posing game.
Find your light. First and foremost, make sure that you, the subject being photographed, are facing the source of light. If the light is behind you (example: your back is to a window) you will be too dark for the lens to see you. If the light is directly above you (example: midday sun) it will create severe shadowing. If the light is below you, you’re going to look as though you’re telling a scary story around a campfire. Almost all lighting can be good and effective depending on how you’re using it and what your goal is for the photos, but for a starting point, aim to face the light source.
Think in angles. Aim to create at least 3 angles in your pose. Instead of facing the camera straight on with limbs pulled in tight to your body, try turning your body to a 45ish degree angle while bending one knee and one elbow. You can create the angles in your pose with your body and/or with the negative space around you. Play around with what feels best in your body and take a few timer selfies to dial in your favorite degree and placement of your angles.
Interact with your wardrobe and your surroundings. Got a hat on? Touch the brim of it. Rockin’ a jacket? One hand in a pocket, other hand gently holding the lapel. Standing next to a light pole? Lean on it. See a bench? Sit on it, lay on it, put a foot on it.
Breathe. It’s not uncommon for folks to hold their breath when posing, and that tension translates into the lens. Inhale as you enter into your pose to fill it with life, then exhale to relax into your pose and fill it with ease. In time, you’ll discover that you can use your breath in many ways to aid the story of the image that you’re creating.
